Massage in Schools Programme (MISP)
What is Massage in Schools?
It is an inclusive programme of positive touch and clothed peer massage for children of 4-12 years. Children wear their normal school clothes and give massage to each other (child to child) on the back, head and arms. Trained members of staff teach the children the positive touch, moves and routine.
How will it benefit the children?
Studies have shown that, when children give massage to each other, they become calmer, concentrate better and have more confidence. This will be of tremendous benefit to the children. It will support their Personal, Social and Emotional development and address such issues as awareness of self and others and personal safety.
When and where does it take place?
The children will carry out the routine in their classroom under the supervision of a trained member of staff. Once the routine has been taught we will carry out a fifteen-minute session every day. The time this takes place during the day may vary so as to best support the children.
Who receives the massage?
Children are taught the positive touch routine through observing an adult carry it out on another adult. Children work with another child to give and receive clothed massage. They ask verbal permission before starting. If children would rather not take part on that occasion they are welcome to decline the massage. Your child will only carry out the massage routine in school with another child from their class.
